There were so many firsts on this trip. It was my first time to present wherein I was treated like a professional and from that, many other firsts were born. Okay, truth in advertising here, it wasn't frozen. It was northern Texas, although they called it West Texas. Lubbock is many things, apparently. I walked into the hotel where I was staying and there were cow hides on the floor. Thank heavens they had removed the head and horns. Fur skeezes me out, and fur under my feet doubly does. (At least the kind where it is obvious that the poor thing died for some decorator's dream). Watching me avoid the cow hides gave the people manning the desk minutes of amusement. This was bar none the nicest hotel I have ever stayed in. For some perspective, I travel for work a lot. Usually when I do, I represent the district I work for. This time, I didn't represent anyone, just me. The last hotel I stayed in while working had a moldy towel draped across the AC unit. The time before that (as an attendee only and not as a presenter) I ended up sharing a bed with a woman I worked with. After a perfect (and solitary) night's sleep, I was taken to the conference site by car. The breakfast was tasty and the speaker was engaging. The speaker was a lawyer from MALDEF who spoke about how racism is often over looked because it is so pervasive. He made my day by asking a who had heard of MALDEF and then saying, when there was little response, "Well, we get away from our roots sometimes. That's okay, that's why I'm here." I looked over the assembled group and they were mainly white, mainly women, mainly young. It was a great moment. He spoke eloquently about a situation in DISD that would make your skin crawl. My presentations went well and then the lunch keynote happened. The lunch itself was fine, but the speaker was wonderful. She talked about standing up for your students and for what we knew about language. After the fall I had had (see previous Fringe post) it was as if the universe was addressing my fears. She spoke about Vygotsky and linguistics and brain science. It was magical. You see, Vygotskians believe that while you have to mediate knowledge, there isn't anything out there that can't be known (its like the Beatles song) but the adult has to help the students get there. He uses language as the example of this, that there is no Universal Grammar, that teachers have to interact with students and they have to interact with each other in order to create sensible language. While you are always looking at the next level, you never forget to build a "bridge" for your students to cross. I was riveted. The organizers of the conference had a dinner planned for us. We went to a local place, not a chain, and ate as a group. As I sat at the table, I realized something: the time had come. At the table with me were 4 doctors of education. The keynote speaker was one of them. We talked a lot about her classroom and her college students. On our way back to the hotel, we talked about moments of courage, when we knew it was time to step forward and take the challenge. She said that she had had a professor talk to her about getting a PhD and teaching people how to become teachers before she even knew what a PhD was. One of her high school students said, "You should do that Miss, 'cause we need more teachers like you!" I don't think that dinner was my moment of courage. I've had a few: being told as an undergraduate that I shouldn't tell people I wanted to go into bilingual education; being told in graduate school that as an anglo, I would never be able to understand what my students experienced; being told not to teach in Spanish in a bilingual program, all of these have built into who I am. But, I went back to the hotel, thought about my life and made a decision. I want to make a difference in teaching. I want to make certain that my kids (and their kids) get the best teachers possible and the classroom isn't the place to do that. And so, with that simple dinner in the frozen north of Texas, I feel re-energized to my field and to my craft. Talking to las doctoras y los doctores, I came to a decision. It's time to get my PhD. We'll see what the future holds. I'm excited again though!
